Fig. 60 Blue-Glazed Cup with Gilt Design of Plum-Blossom in the Moonlight

Yuan dynasty

Height 4 cm, rim diameter 8.1 cm, base diameter 4 cm

Hebei Museum

The technique of gilding used on this blue-glazed cup, in which an extremely thin layer of gold leaf is applied to the surface, is a decorative technique often used on lacquerware but very seldom seen on porcelain. Such vessels were unusual in the Yuan dynasty.

Types of vessels decorated in underglaze red during the Yuan include large guan jars, pear-shaped bottle vases, meiping vases, grain containers in the shapes of buildings (used as grave goods), double-lugged flat-sided bottles, stem-cups, spouted bowls, plates, bowls, and four-lugged jars, as well as various smaller items. Some fragments of jue goblets with unevenly painted underglaze red have been excavated from the Luomaqiao kiln-site at Jingdezhen.
